GKB media statement
The Gnaala Karla Booja Aboriginal Corporation (GKB) has expressed disappointment after learning of comments from Shire of Harvey Councillor Carbone, about abolishing the Acknowledgement of Country.
Incorporating practices such as Acknowledgement of Country and Welcome to Country help the Noongar Nation to build important relationships – they also represent an understanding and respect.
GKB has been working with Local Government Areas within the GKB region to build positive and harmonious relationships and partnerships with shire councils.
John Penny, GKB Chair, said “For our people, an Acknowledgement of Country and a Welcome to Country is not tokenistic. It demonstrates respect and a willingness for us all to learn and grow together.”
“We hope that the comments made by Councillor Carbone are not reflective of the views of the other Councillors, their colleagues, or the community, and we are fairly certain that this is the case.”
